Bio Notes: John Ramsay Kirkwood was born in Paisley in about 1870. He served his articles with the engineering practice Forman & McCall from 1884. At that time they were involved in planning the West Highland Railway. In the census of 1891 Kirkwood called himself 'engineer and architect' but his work was largely engineering - railways, docks and bridges in Ceylon, Trinidad and Australia, returning to work for McAlpines on the Murrayfield stadium, the Hall of Industry at the British Empire Exhinition in London in 1924 and the Dorchester Hotel, those for McAlpines being early examples of the use of reinforced concrete.
