Basic Biographical Details

Name: Donald Hood Cattanach
Designation: Architect
Born: 25 December 1928
Died: 28 January 1984
Bio Notes: Donald Hood Cattanach was born on 25 December 1928, one of the two sons and five children of Alexander Cattanach junior, architect, Kingussie. He was educated at Loretto School. He and his brother Alexander (who went on to become a physician) helped their father in their school holidays 'usually holding the end of his cloth tape'. After Loretto he served in the family regiment, The Cameron Highlanders and on release went to Glasgow where he studied for the degree of BArch at the University of Strathclyde.

He was admitted ARIBA and ARIAS in 1955. For two periods, from July 1954- 1955 and from 1955-56, he had a post as assistant in the office of Keppie Henderson & Gleave. In the year between, 1955-56 he worked in his father's practice acting as principal during his father's illness. He joined the practice of J & F Johnston as senior assistant architect in January 1958. He was promoted to partner in January 1961. In this post Cattanach oversaw a wide range of projects including farms, private houses, shops, offices and industrial work and departments stores. He was also responsible for the development of several sites extending from East Lothian to Dundee for co-ownership housing schemes.

He married Patricia Watkins on 14 December 1957 and they had three daughters. In 1968 he was elected FRIBA, proposed by James Stewart Johnston, Thomas Inglis and Douglas Haig Bamber.

Cattanach was interested in local affairs and served as president of the Edinburgh Junior Chamber of Commerce and served on the Council of the edinburgh Architectural Assocation.

He died on 28 January 1984.

His brother, Dr Alexander Cattanach, wrote (email to DSA 30 November 2006):
'Donald was a big man, larger than life at times, much in demand for public, usually after dinner, speaking, and was a Mason, eventually the Grand Master of Lodge One (of Edinburgh or Scotland?). His funeral had a massive attendance'.
