Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Henderson | Designation: | Architect | Born: | 27 June 1894 | Died: | 27 May 1984 | Bio Notes: | James Henderson was born in Perth on 27 June 1894the son of James Henderson, music salesman and his wife Mary Jack. He was articled to Francis William Deas of Edinburgh from 1908 to 1913. On completing his apprenticeship he joined Robert Stodart Lorimer as draughtsman. It is not clear whether he undertook war service but he remained with Lorimer until 1920, assisting the chief assistant John Ross McKay, and in the following year moved to Kirkcaldy to take up the post of chief assistant to William Williamson. He subsequently worked as draughtsman to Alexander Lorne Campbell of Edinburgh from 1925 to 1927; to Thomas Aikman Swan of Edinburgh from 1927 to 1928; and to Maclaren Soutar Salmond of Dundee and Alexander Mair of Ayr, both apparently from 1928 to 1930. In the latter year he was appointed draughtsman in the Edinburgh City Architect's Department under Ebenezer James MacRae, and he was still there when he was admitted LRIBA on 5 March 1943, his proposers being Lorne Campbell, McKay and Thomas Forbes Maclennan.
Henderson died on 27 May 1984 at the Eastern General Hospital, Edinburgh, aged 89 years.
