Basic Biographical Details Name: | Hugh Harvey | Designation: | | Born: | 1878 | Died: | 28 September 1944 | Bio Notes: | Hugh Harvey was born in 1878, the son of Hugh Harvey, carrier, and his wife, Elizabeth McQueen. He was articled to John Armour of Irvine in 1893. He studied at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow under Charles Gourlay, receiving tuition in sanitary engineering from Gilbert Thompson and in civil engineering from Professor Moneur. He spent his summer holidays sketching and measuring old buildings in England and Scotland.
Harvey remained with the same firm thereafter, initially as assistant and from 1922 as a partner, although the practice continued to be known as J & J Armour, the title adopted when Armour had taken his son, John Armour junior, into partnership in 1903. Harvey was registered as an architect on 19 December 1933 and was admitted LRIBA on 13 April 1943, his proposers being William Cowie, James Houston and John Armour junior. At that time he was still a partner in the Armour firm.
He died on 28 September 1944 at his home in Irvine.
