At that time it was involved in government contracts and was under the direction of John Anderson, son of one of the founding partners, Peter Anderson. In 1917 a large part of the 15,000-strong workforce was recruited to the Royal Engineers, John Anderson being rewarded with a knighthood.
John Anderson took over as chairman on the death of his father in 1922, but business waned and the firm went into liquidation in 1925.
