He continued his father's buisness, contracting for the Ingrams's Town Hall there and built Gartferry House, possibly to their designs.
McLachlan lived at Springfield House, Irvine where he was both a burgess and a magistrate. He had one son and two duaghters who with his mother, aged 79, were living at home in 1851. Walter McLAchlan was associated in business with his younger brother Andrew, based at Haveloch House, Ayr, and died of typhoid in Paris in 1868 after visiting an invalid relative in Mentone. He was buried in the Auld Kirkyard, Irvine.
