Bio Notes: James Brodie was articled to A & W Reid & Wittet of Elgin from 1896 to 1901 and remained as assistant for a year after completing his apprenticeship. In 1902 he moved to Edinburgh and secured an appointment as draughtsman to Kinross & Tarbolton. He spent two years in that office and subsequently spent a year with J N Scott & A Lorne Campbell in the same city, a year with James Miller in Glasgow, and five years with William Wallace of London (initially in the firm of Wallace & Gibson). Whilst in the latter office he passed the intermediate exam in 1909. In 1911 he moved to York to work as draughtsman to Walter Henry Brierley. He served in the Royal Engineers from 1915, reaching the rank of Captain, but returned to Brierley's office at the end of the First World War and was admitted ARIBA in mid-1921; his proposers were Miller, Harold Ogle Tarbolton and Brierley, who wrote in his supporting statement: 'he is very competent and has knowledge of and is experienced in first class architectural practice.'
