Basic Biographical Details Name: | Andrew Mitchell | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | | Bio Notes: | Andrew Mitchell was articled to D MacAndrew & Co of Aberdeen for five years from October 1894. Nothing is known of his movements over the two-and-a-half years following completion of his apprenticeship, but in July 1902 he took up a post in the Commanding Royal Engineers' Office in South Africa, remaining there until October 1908. In March 1910 he joined the office of Gilbert & Constanduros in London, leaving in August 1912 and passing the intermediate exam in the latter year. Another apparent gap in his career followed, after which he presumably undertook war service. Following the end of the war he found an appointment with the West Ham Education Authority in London, and he was still there when he was admitted ARIBA in late 1920 or early 1921, his proposers being Arthur Bartlett, A Saxon Snell and his former employer Horace Gilbert, who wrote in his supporting statement: 'until 1912 he was an assistant architect in my employ, his work was always painstaking & accurate, shewing evidence of careful previous training.' | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | South Africa | Business | 1902 | 1908 | Working in Commanding Royal Engineers' Office | | 4, Sherrard Road, Forest Gate, London E, England | Private | 1920 * | | |
