Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Henderson | Designation: | | Born: | 26 February 1837 | Died: | 24 September 1931 | Bio Notes: | William Henderson was born at Wardend, Lonmay, Aberdeenshire on 26 February 1837. He came of a family of architect masons, becoming a stonecutter at the age of 13. He emigrated to Montreal in 1857 to work as a mason but returned to Aberdeen in 1861, marrying Mary Jane Smith in June of the following year and establishing himself as a builder there.
In 1872 Henderson secured employment with the Federal Department of Public Works in Canada, mainly as an overseer. After a peripatetic existence he settled in Victoria in 1897, still in Departmental employ, and was eventually allowed to design buildings in his own right from about 1913.
Henderson's first wife Mary Jane died in 1904. In 1917 he married Caroline d'Aguilar. He was active in public life as alderman at Oak Bay (1906-8) and as Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge British Columbia in 1913.
