He was elected a member of the Society of Architects on 12 February 1920 and this entitled him to be admitted ARIBA in mid-1925 without the need for proposers. At that time he was an architectural assistant to Ayr Corporation. At some point before 1939 he was burgh surveyor of Inveness. By 1950 he had returned to Ayr and obtained the post of Burgh Surveyor there.
