At the time of the 1861 census he was unmarried and living at Great Wellington Place, Paisley Road, Glasgow with three nephews, probably S's sons, of whom the eldest, John (born 1834) was also an architect, and the youngest, Robert W (born c.1849), was an architectural apprentice.
