Basic Biographical Details Name: | Robert William Gall Heughan | Designation: | | Born: | 3 September 1887 | Died: | 3 May 1950 | Bio Notes: | Robert William Gall Heughan was born on 3 September 1887 in Dunfermline, Fife, the son of William Heughan and his wife Mary Ann Gall who had been born in Canada. It is possible that William Heughan had spent some time in Canada as he does not appear in the British Census records for 1881. The family moved frequently during Robert's early years and were living at Gartland New Lodge, Lochwinnoch in 1891 and Craig offices, Kilmaurs in 1901. He may have received his early training in Irvine but this has yet to be checked.
Robert William Gall Heughan attended evening classes in Glasgow. He emigrated to Canada in 1908 and immediately secured a post in the Canadian Pacific Railways Architect's Department. He was initially based in the Montreal office but moved to work with the Chief Architect, W S Painter and worked with him on designs for Lake Louise and the Banff Spring hotels. On 27 April 1916 he married Mary Highgate Macaulay in Montreal, Canada. (She was born 9th Sept 1889 in Glasgow).
During the First World War Heughan moved to the United States and worked in both Albany and Detroit but returned to Montreal and joined the office of Ross & MacFarlane (later Ross & MacDonald). He remained there as assistant until the partnership was dissolved in 1946. Later that year he became a partner in the successor firm, Ross Paterson Townsend & Heughan where he became the chief designer. He also practised independently and won the competition for the Regina War Memorial in 1926.
Heughan died on 3 May 1950.
