Basic Biographical Details

Name: Alexander Pirnie
Designation:
Born: 1825
Died: 12 April 1879
Bio Notes: Alexander Pirnie was born in 1825 in Edinburgh the son of Alexander Pirnie, stone mason and hs wife Agnes. By 1841 the family had moved to Kirkliston and the young Alexander was an apprentice mason with his father. Ten years later it would appear that he had moved back into Edinburgh but by 1861 he had settled in Wilton in Hawick, living and working there for the remainder of his life.

'Buildings of Scotland' attributes the design of the Commercial Bank in Hawick to Pirnie but it would appear that James Harkness, builder, Hawick was responsible for the design and that Pirnie executed the carved ornamental stonework, although David Rhind made recommendations about security as early as 1865. There is further evidence in the Commercial Bank Board Minutes of David Rhind as having worked on the building in 1857.

Pirnie died intestate in Hawick on 12 April 1879 and is described as a'stone-hewer' at that time.
