During the years 1936 to 1940 his services were sought as an architectural draughtsman. From 1936 to 1937 he assisted in the practice of Messrs T P Marwick & Son in Edinburgh. He moved to Glasgow for a fairly brief period between 1937 and 1938 to work as a draughtsman under Thomas Smith Tait on the Empire Exhibition but returned to Marwick therafter and remained with him until he was called up for war service in 1940.
