Basic Biographical Details Name: | Thomas Brownlie | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | 25 October 1865 | Bio Notes: | Thomas Brownlie was an Ayr and Glasgow building contractor who was skilled in architectural draughtsmanship and probably acted as his own architect on at least some of his undertakings. He leased Dalreoch Quarry on the Ardoch estate in Cardross Parish from the Bontine family from 1839 to 1854 and was Deacon Convener of the Trades House, sitting as a mason c.1845-46.
Brownlie was contractor for Gillespie Graham's additions to Brodick Castle in 1844-45, rebuilding the new main tower after it collapsed during construction in February 1845. For this work he made a very competent set of copy drawings; Thomas Hamilton was brought in by Gillespie Graham to arbitrate on the quality of the rebuilding. Brownlie also built Springfield Quay, tenements in Eglinton Street, Glasgow, and was a partner in Blochairn Iron Works. He was sequestrated c.1858, but this may have been in respect of one aspect of his business interests.
He can probably be identified with the Thomas Brownlie who is described in his will as 'sometime builder, Glasgow, afterwards irona dn quarrymaster there, latterly residing at Garscadden House, New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire. His wife was Jane Willox. Thomas Brownlie Junior who was presumably his son also worked as a mason and builder in Glasgow and died soemtime before 30 August 1873 in Paisley. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | | | | | Glasgow, Scotland | Business | | | |
