In 1874 Anderson moved to Edinburgh 'having secured an appointment in the offices of a well-known firm of architects there'. In about 1878 he moved back to the Borders and became principal draughtsman to Messrs Herbertson & Son, remaining with them for about ten years. In about 1889 he returned to Edinburgh and reamined there with the exception of three years spent in Inverness. He always lived in the Morningside area.
