Bio Notes: James Cairncross was born on 2 May 1913 and was articled to Rollo & Hall, attending classes at the School of Architecture, Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen from September 1931. In November 1935 he joined the office of Allan & Friskin as assistant. He obtained his diploma in June 1937 and was admitted ARIBA on 4 April 1938, his proposers being R Leslie Rollo, Charles Geddes Soutar and William Salmond. At that time he was living at 26 Forfar Road and was still in the employment of Allan & Friskin. He was also an Associate of the Dundee Institute of Architects.

Cairncross moved to Northern Ireland in about 1946. In the Kalendar for 1950-51 he is listed as working for the Northern Ireland Housing Trust in Belfast. He remained there working for the Trust until about 1970. He died shortly thereafter.
