He was articled to the family firm of Gillespie & Scott, but it is not yet known if he had any wider experience. He assisted his father in the practice of his father at 4 Queen's Gardens throughout the 1920s and 1930s, but his career was cut short by a serious accident in 1946 when an amateur dramatics stage-set collapsed on him.
