He was presumably articled to his father and studied at Glasgow School of Art 1909-15.
Skirving continued his father's practice until at least 1940. He married Jeannie Spiers Buchanan: they had a daughter, Mary, he died of arterio sclerosis and heart disease at Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, 7 July 1958.
