Bio Notes: Wilm (or William?) Knox was born in Glasgow in 1858 and was apprenticed to Moffatt & Aitken in Edinburgh. During a world tour in 1886 he visited Chicago and was impressed by the innovations in building design there and as a result decided to stay there. He found a place as assistant in the office of Burnham & Root and met John Elliot there who was a fellow assistant. Together they set up in practice in mid-1888 in Toronto. A year later Beaumont Jarvis was taken into partnership and a short time later the firm won the prestigious competition for the Confederation Life Building. In 1892 attracted by the possibility of work on the Columbian Exhibition they suspended the partnership, returned to Chicago and found work in the office of Henry Ives Cobb. The following year Knox moved to Cleveland, Elliot joining him soon thereafter and the partnership was revived. They continued to practise together until Knox's death in 1915.
