Bio Notes: John Paterson was a civil engineer in charge of Leith Docks from c.1803 until his death on 4 January 1823. He briefly held the post of Superintendent of Public Works in Edinburgh from May to December 1809, and in June the same year was appointed Surveyor or Superintendent of Works to the Heriot Trustees, but resigned in July of the following year. He died on 4 January 1823.
