Basic Biographical Details | Name: | Gerald Wellesley Wellington | | Designation: | | | Born: | 21 August 1885 | | Died: | 4 January 1972 | | Bio Notes: | Gerald Wellesley Wellington (sometimes just Gerald Wellesley) was born on 21 August 1885, the son and heir to the sixth Duke of Wellington. He was educated at Eton and entered the Diplomatic Service in 1908 being posted in Constantinople, Rome and St Petersburg. His moved to the profession of architecture after this and was articled to Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel from 1919. He commenced independent practice in 1921 and formed a partnership with Trenwith Wills some time thereafter but certainly before 1925. He was elected FRIBA in 1929. From 1936 he held the post of Surveyor of the King's Works of Art, from 1944-1949 he was Lord Lieutenant of the City of London and of Hampshire from 1949-1960. He was a Trustee of the National Gallery from 1950 to 1957 and Governor of the Isle of Wight from 1956 to 1965. He held the post of Chancellor of Southampton University for a time.
