Bio Notes: John Hall was born on 10 March 1817 in Bowden, Roxburghshire, the son of Thomas Douglas Hall, mason and his wife Agnes Stirling and the brother of Robert Hall, mason in Galashiels. John had some architectural pretensions and joined his brother in the family firm, the name becoming Robert Hall & Co at this point. For a time in the mid- to late 19th century John Hall was in partnership with his brother in law Andrew Murray as Hall & Murray. When his son, also John, was taken into partnership in or before 1884, the name became J & J Hall.
