He was articled to Frederick Josias Robinson in 1874 remaining with him until 1878 when he moved to the practice of John Reginald Naylor as an improver. He remained there as assistant until 1887 when he was taken into partnership by Naylor. After Naylor's death in 1923 he formed a partnership with Joseph Alfred Woore, Charles H R Naylor and Bernard Widdows in Derby.
