Bio Notes: Thomas Witlam Atkinson was born in Cawthorne, South Yorkshire on 6 March 1799. He would appear to have trained as a mason or stone carver. He later turned to architecture and practised in London and Manchester. Subsequently he travelled widely in Asia, his obituarist remarking 'Atkinson displayed in the course of his wanderings, great power of endurance and much address; so that his works have added important particulars in the knowledge of Russia in Asia including the River Amoor and the confines of Chinese Tartary'.

Atkinson died in Lower Walmer, Kent on 13 August 1861.
