Basic Biographical Details Name: | Harry Barnes | Designation: | | Born: | 1870 | Died: | 13 October 1935 | Bio Notes: | Harry Barnes was born in 1870 on the Isle of Wight but was educated in Sunderland and trained in the office of J & T Tillman. He commenced independent practice in Sunderland and West Hartlepool in 1893, subsequently forming a partnership with Frederick Ernest Coates. Together they secured the commission the DCC Shire Hall in Old Elve, despite having not won the competition. The partnership was dissolved in 1904 when Barnes joined Charles Frederick Burton in West Hartlepool; this lasted until 1911. About this time Barnes seems to have moved to Newcastle and became involved in politics, initially gaining an appointment under the Finance Act of 1909, then serving on Newcastle Town Council and from 1918-22 serving as MP for Newcastle East. He appears to have still practised in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in a small way; after the First World War he moved to London becoming LCC Alderman from 1923-25. He specialised in rating matters while in London and became an active member of the RIBA, serving as Vice President from 1923-26 and leading the campaign for the registration of architects. His son T S Barnes joined his father's practice and may have been responsible for much of the design work.
