Basic Biographical Details

Name: Bryce McMaster
Designation: Engineer
Born: 1832
Died: October 1877
Bio Notes: Bryce McMaster was born in 1832, the son of Major General McMaster. In 1848 he was articled to the civil engineer T H Bertram, joining the staff of Isambard Kingdom Brunel at the end of his articles in 1852. He left in August of the following year to enter the service of the Madras Railway as assistant engineer and was admitted AMICE following his promotion to resident engineer in 1856.

In January 1862 McMaster left the Madras Railway to join Brassey & Wythes on the Mauritius Railway and was admitted MICE the following month. He remained with that project for four years, returning to Britain early in 1866 to order material for the contractors of the Delhi Railway prior to going out there himself. While in Britain he competed for the Waverley Station reconstruction, probably in the hope of establishing a home-based practice, but was placed second.

In 1872 McMaster was appointed first sub-agent and then agent on the East Argentine Railway but his health failed in October of the following year and he returned home to recuperate. He recovered sufficiently to go back to India as assistant engineer to the Madras Railway in March 1877 but died there in the following October.
