He was a draughtsman and clerk of works to the Prison Commissioners for Scotland from 1878 to 1888, supervising the construction of Barlinnie Prison in 1880-86. In 1889 he emigrated to Queensland to erect mills for the Aldershot Smelting Company at Maryburgh. Thereafter he worked as a draughtsman and clerk of works, latterly in Brisbane.
