Bio Notes: George Cryle was born in Aberdeen in 1855, the son of James Coyle, a labourer, and his wife Mary Smith. He was apprenticed to a stonemason and appears to have worked in Edinburgh where he married Jessie Ann Alexander on 2 June 1878. Shortly thereafter they emigrated to Queensland where he joined the Queensland Public Works Department in July 1889. He had a long and distinguished career as a superintendent of works rather than as an architect until his retirement on 30 March 1921. He died at Brisbane on 1 January 1926.
