Designation:
Born: 1824

Bio Notes: John W Welch was born in 1824 and probably had some Scottish experience before being 'trained in architecture in England'. He emigrated to the USA in the early to mid-1850s and commenced independent practice in New York, his first commission being a church in Newark, New Jersey. It established his reputation as a church architect, his most important commission being Dr Talmadge's Tabernacle in Brooklyn, built in 1872.

Welch was a charter member of the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and a Fellow of the Institute but his membership had lapsed prior to his death in 1894, probably because of retirement from practice.
