Bio Notes: Andrew Grierson Thomson was born in Dumfries in 1848. He 'studied architecture in England' but probably had some experience in Dumfries beforehand. He emigrated to the USA in his late teens and completed his training with unspecified New York practices. He then obtained a post as Superintendent of Construction for Post Office buildings with the US Supervising Architect's Office in Washington, which he continued to hold until the early 1880s when he became associated with Charles Coolidge Haight in New York. In 1890 he left Haight's office to become consulting architect to the J L Mott Ironworks in New York and planned and supervised its new works at Trenton, New Jersey. His appointment with Mott's ended in 1893 when he recommenced private practice in Brooklyn. He was admitted to the American Institute of Architects in 1896 and died in 1911.
