Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Waldie Bogue | Designation: | | Born: | 1832 or 1833 | Died: | 8 March 1903 | Bio Notes: | James Waldie Bogue was born in 1832 or 1833, the son of James Bogue and Catherine Waldie. Nothing is known of his career except that he collaborated with Robert Scott Burn on 'Domestic Architecture: being a series of designs for cottages and villas, with description of the plans, estimates of the costs, and general remarks and specifications. The ground plans, elevations and specifications by James W Bogue, architect, Edinburgh', published in London in 1865. Although Bogue described himself as an architect, or assistant architect, he does not appear in the 'Architects', Engineers' and Building Trades' Directory' of 1868, suggesting that he was a senior assistant in an office rather than an architect in independent practice.
Bogue married Janet Philips who was 15 years his senior. He had a son of the same name born on 30 May 1856. By 1900 he had separated from Janet Philips. In 1901 it was alleged that on 27 April 1900, he had contracted a bigamous marriage with Isabella Darling Haig, a dressmaker aged 26. At his trial he entered a plea of guilty to the charge for which he was sentenced to nine months imprisonment.
He died on 8 March 1903 at 23 St James Square, Edinburgh, an address which suggests that he was in less than affluent circumstances. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 23, St James Square, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private | | 8 March 1903 | Place of death | | 7, New Broughton, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1864 or 1865 | | | | Edinburgh, Scotland | Private/business | 1865 * | | | | 13, Earlston Place, Abbeyhill, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private | 1901 * | | |
