Bio Notes: Thomas Brown, described as Thomas Brown Senior, was a painter, architect and engineer living in St James Square, Edinburgh between about 1846 and 1856. He studied under the engraver Robert Scott, but where he trained as architect and engineer is not known. He gave up practice on obtaining a commission as a captain in the army, and was the author of several works on natural history. It is doubtful if any of his designs were actually built.

Brown was the father of Thomas Brown Junior, landscape painter, who exhibited at the RSA from the 1840s until the 1880s.
