He was born on 22 December 1867, the son of Charles Hadfield and the grandson of Matthew Ellison Hadfield, and was taken into partnership by his father in 1896 or 1897. He practised alone after his father's death in 1916, and in 1924 entered into partnership with Robert Cawkwell. He was the President of the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Society of Architects from 1928 to 1930.
