He served his articles with W S Dobell in Exeter and gained early experience chiefly in the offices of William Caröe, Goldie, Child & Goldie and Sir Aston Webb & E Ingress Bell. In the latter office he met William Nicol McKinlay, and they subsequently entered into partnership, practising in Croydon and later, from 1905, in South Africa.
