Bio Notes: William Sherriffs Joss was born on 14 July 1904 and was articled to Sutherland & George of Aberdeen on 16 April 1919. After serving a five-year apprenticeship there he spent a year as assistant to George Watt before becoming a full-time student at Gray's School of Art, where he received his diploma in June 1927. He then returned to Watt's office for a further two years, subsequently working for Robert Leslie Rollo before moving to Sunderland in 1930. There he obtained a position as an architectural assistant to the Borough Surveyor of Sunderland, post which he held at least until the time of his admittance as LRIBA on 2 December 1935, Rollo being his sole proposer.
