Basic Biographical Details

Name: Matthew Cormie
Designation:
Born: 16 August 1900
Died: 28 November 1965
Bio Notes: Matthew Cormie was born on 16 August 1900 and was articled to John Bright Gladstone of Lockerbie in August 1919. On completion of his apprenticeship in August 1924 he joined Evan Tweedie of Annan as senior assistant, and in May the following year moved to Carlisle to work as assistant to S W B Jack. During these early years he studied part-time for three years in the architectural section of Carlisle School of Art. In May 1926 he returned to Gladstone's office as chief assistant, leaving in March 1928 to commence practice on his own account in Annan. Presumably due to a shortage of business he emigrated to Argentina after just over a year. He secured a five-year contract as architectural assistant in the Chief Engineer's Department of the Ferrocarril Central in Buenos Aires. He was admitted LRIBA in late 1930 or early 1931. His application lacked the support of any RIBA members as proposers, but was accompanied by recommendation letters from James Smith of Ferrocarril del Sud and Eustace Lauriston Conder, despite the fact that neither knew him personally.

By 1950 Cormie was a partner in the practice Fairbrother Hall & Hedges. He must have retired by 1959 as there is no record of him in the RIBA Kalendar of 1959-60. He died on 28 November 1965, survived by his wife Isabella Wyllie Boyd.
