Basic Biographical Details Name: | Henry Edmund Goodridge | Designation: | | Born: | 1797 | Died: | 1864 | Bio Notes: | Henry Edmund Goodridge was born in Bath in 1797, the son of James Goodridge, a successful builder there. He was articled to John Lowder and proved to be an able pupil. He set up busniess on his own account in the 1820s in Bath. Goodridge was hard-working and a very competent architect and he and his son obtained many commissions in Somerset and Wiltshire. He was selected by William Beckford, an exacting client, to design Lansdown Tower. Beckford's daughter married the Duke of Hamilton and this led to his being employed by the Duke at Hamilton Palace.
Generally Goodridge's earlier work is in the Greek revival style but he also designed several Gothic churches, a neo-Norman castle and a Romanesque style Nonconformist chapel. Both Goodridge's own house and Beckford's Lansdown Tower are eclectic, drawing from a variety of sources to gain maximum picturesque effect. He entered the Houses of Parliament competition with a design which included an octagonal House of Commons and a baronial hall for the Lords which included a minstrel gallery.
About 1818 Goodridge spent some time in France. He also visited Italy in 1829.
Goodridge died on 26 October 1864 and was buried in the cemetery at Lansdown. His son continued the practice after his death. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Bath, Somerset, England | Business | | | |
