Basic Biographical Details

Name: Walter Reid
Designation:
Born: 1866
Died: 29 March 1933
Bio Notes: Walter Reid was born in 1866, probably a son of William Henry Reid of Cape Town and brother of Arthur Henry Reid (born 1856). He was articled to William Henry Reid from 1884 to 1886, and the following year joined Cape Town Corporation as an architectural assistant. In 1888 he moved to Johannesburg to become assistant to Arthur Henry Reid and Robert Lockhart McCowat in the firm of Reid & McCowat. A year later he returned to Cape Town Corporation as Architect and Surveyor. He commenced independent practice in Cape Town in 1896 but returned to Johannesburg in 1897 to join Arthur Henry Reid in partnership, the latter's partnership with McCowat presumably having been dissolved by this time. The practice was joined by Hubert Springford East in 1902.

Walter Reid was admitted FRIBA in 1906. He was first President of the Association of Transvaal Architects in 1909, and again in 1910 and 1915. He died on 29 March 1933.
