He was articled to T Scott Sutherland from 1927 to 1930 whilst continuing his studies, receiving his diploma in 1930 and passing his post-diploma and the Professional Practice exam the following year. He was admitted ARIBA in early 1932, his proposers being Sutherland, William John Taylor and Alexander Finlay MacKenzie. By that time he had taken an appointment at the Inland Revenue in Inverness.
