Bio Notes: Alexander Buchanan Campbell was born on 14 June 1914, the son of Hugh Paterson Campbell, master mariner, and his wife Elizabeth Flett, seamstress. He was articled to Gillespie Kidd & Coia in 1931. He attended evening classes at Glasgow School of Architecture from 1932 to 1934, followed by two years of day classes, assisting in the office of John Thomson King during the summer holiday of 1935 and with Gillespie Kidd & Coia in summer 1936. He received his diploma in June 1937. In the same year became a studio instructor at the School under Thomas Harold Hughes, and he was admitted ARIBA on 6 December, his proposers being Hughes, William James Smith and Norman Aitken Dick. The following year he joined George Grey Wornum as an assistant, and in 1940 he took an appointment in the Glasgow Office of Public Works. He was elected FRIAS in 1953 and FRIBA in 1955, by which time he was practising from 128 Elderslie Street, Glasgow and living at 26 Station Road, Bearsden. His proposers were Jack Coia, Ninian Rutherford Jamieson Johnston and Frederick Robert Wylie. Coia remarked in Campbell's Fellowship Nomination Paper that James Scott's showroom was a 'very good piece of design' and that Buchanan Cambell had 'architectural ability'. He was serving as a representative of the RIAS's Glasgow chapter by 1964.

By the 1980s the practice had become Alexander Buchanan Campbell & Partners.

He died aged 92 at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock on 13 May 2007. His wife, Sheila Neville Smith had predeceased him but he was survived by at least one son who lived in St Andrews.
