Basic Biographical Details Name: | James West Cleland Wingate | Designation: | | Born: | 14 March 1903 | Died: | 12 March 1988 | Bio Notes: | James West Cleland Wingate was born on 14 March 1903 and was articled to Cowie & Miller of Wishaw and Motherwell on 1 September 1919. A year later he commenced the diploma course at the Glasgow School of Architecture, attending day classes for the first three years and resuming his apprenticeship on 1 September 1924 but this time in the office of Stewart & Paterson. He received his certificate in June 1925 and in May the following year joined the architecture staff of the Glasgow Education Authority. He was awarded his diploma in June 1931 and was admitted ARIBA later that year, his proposers being his former employers George Andrew Paterson and John Stewart, and the director of the Glasgow School of Architecture, Thomas Harold Hughes. He remained in the Glasgow Education Office until at least 1939.
Wingate retired to the Canary Islands and died there on 12 March 1988 in hospital in Las Palmas. He was survived by his wife Agnes.
