Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Henry Syme | Designation: | | Born: | 1845 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | William Henry Syme was born in Edinburgh in 1845. He was articled to Peddie & Kinnear from 1859 to 1864 and subsequently spent three years as improver in the office of David Bryce. Whilst there he was honorary secretary of the Edinburgh Architectural Association in 1865-6. In 1867 he moved to London, where he assisted Benjamin Ferrey and Edward Cookworthy Robins until 1869. He spent the following nine years designing and superintending all the buildings on the estates of W H Smith MP, T F Halsey MP, Lord Chesham and others. He was admitted ARIBA on 1 November 1875, his proposers being Robins, Ferrey and Henry Currey, and hecommenced independent practice in 1877 in Watford, Hertfordshire. He was elevated to FRIBA on 18 November 1889, his proposers being Robins, J T Christopher and Ewan Christian.
