Bio Notes: John Sulman was born in Greenwich on 29 August 1849. He was RIBA Pugin Travelling Scholar in 1871 and practised in London in partnership with Mr Rhodes until 1885 when he emigrated to Sydney. He was knighted in 1924, and died in Sydney on 18 August 1934. He is best known for his town planning work in Australia but he designed a number of Congregational chapels before he emigrated.

A W Hennings, a former pupil, took over the London office in 1885 and worked in partnership with Edward Potts of Oldham as Sulman Potts & Hennings.
