His father died in 1890 when he was only five years old, leaving him and four young siblings in the care of his mother. Record of the younger MacLaren's training is as yet lacking but it was probably with Dunn & Watson. He emigrated with his twin brother John Leslie MacLaren to South Carolina where he practised as an architect. He never married.
