Basic Biographical Details Name: | Leo Durnin | Designation: | | Born: | 10 May 1902 | Died: | 29 September 1988 | Bio Notes: | Leo Durnin was born on 10 May 1902, the son of John Durnin, slater, and his wife Catherine Reid. He studied at Robert Gordon's College during two periods, between 1917 and 1919 and between 1923 and 1924. He was articled to Wilson & Walker from July 1919 until 1922 and at that point transferred to Ballantine & Taylor where remained as assistant until August 1923. In December of that year he moved to Leek in North Staffordshire to become an assistant to Robert Thelwall Longden but returned to Aberdeen in April 1926 to take up a post on the Housing Department of Aberdeen Town Council. In that year he was admitted ARIBA.
In or around 1932 he was involved with the building of the Bon Accord Baths. In 1936-37 he visited Holland to study Dudok's buildings and after his return he re-joined the City Architect's office in 1938. He was still linked to that office in the 1960s, but by 1964 he had established the practice of Leo Durnin & Partners with an office at 252 Union Street, an address he had held from at least 1950. By 1973 he had taken Alan Booth Minto and Ian Strachan into partnership as Durnin, Minto & Strachan. They were joined by Michael McLeod at some point thereafter.
Durnin died on 29 September 1988 at Nazareth House, 34 Claremont Street, Aberdeen.
