Basic Biographical Details Name: | James William Hills | Designation: | | Born: | 9 October 1907 | Died: | 22 August 1974 | Bio Notes: | James William Hills was born on 9 October 1907, the son of Peter Harrington Hills, assurance company superintendent, and his wife Sarah Bowering Johnston. He served his apprenticeship with William Ramage of Edinburgh from 1923 to 1927, joining John Alexander McWilliam as draughtsman in the latter year and studying at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College. In 1929 he moved to the office Mears & Carus-Wilson and he passed the RIBA final exam the following year. He was awarded Distinction in his thesis. He was admitted ARIBA in early 1931, his proposers being Frank Charles Mears, Charles Denny Carus-Wilson and John Begg. By 1939-40 he appears to have been an assistant with Sir Frank Mears as he gave his address as 44 Queen Street at that date.
He died on 22 August 1974 at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
