Basic Biographical Details Name: | Hugh John Mackenzie | Designation: | | Born: | 1846 | Died: | 15 February 1907 | Bio Notes: | Hugh John Mackenzie was born in 1846 at Dandaleith, near Rothes, Moray, the eldest son of Thomas Mackenzie, architect, Aberdeen and Elgin, and Helen Margaret McInnes. His younger brother was Alexander Marshall Mackenzie. Hugh trained as an architect and civil engineer and seems to have moved to Edinburgh - perhaps working in an Edinburgh office - but returned to Morayshire in 1874 to take up the post of Road Surveyor for Moray from which he retired in 1893. In 1901 he is described as 'architect' and was living at his father's house at Maryhill, Morayshire where his mother had continued to live after the death of her husband in 1854. He was desribed as a quiet retiring man; he married a Miss Lawson and had two sons and a daughter. According to the obituary written by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, he 'was involved with many buildings in Elgin' though this may have been as clerk of works rather than as architect and designer. He died on 15 February 1907 when one of his pall-bearers was Dr Cameron, Firhall, Nairn, reinforcing the various links the family had with Nairn. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Edinburgh, Scotland | Private/business | After 1846 | 1874 | | | Moray, Morayshire, Scotland | Business | 1874 | | | | Maryhill, Morayshire, Scotland | Private | 1901 * | | | | Ladyhill House, Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland | Private | 1901 * | | |
