In 1871 he was living in Craigendarrich in Glenmuick with his family. His father died when he was young and George Hall had moved to Aberdeen as a jouneyman mason by 1881. He practised as a builder. He built a house for himself in Ballater also called Craigendarroch. Either he or his son, also George, enlarged and aggrandized the house in about 1920.
