Bio Notes: Noel Edmund Ironside Burchell was born in 1905, the son of John George Burchell, electrical engineer, and his wife Constance Rose Ironside. He served his articles with Stewart Kaye from 1921 to 1926 and remained there for two years as assistant, studying at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College. In 1928 he left Kaye to join the office of James Bow Dunn, moving to that of William Williamson the following year and a year later returning to Dunn's firm; by that time Dunn's health was deteriorating and he died in August that year, his son Herbert continuing the practice as James B Dunn & Partners. Burchell left in 1931 to spend some time working for Leadbetter, Fairley & Reid, and in 1932 was appointed architect to the Marquess of Lothian's Newbattle Estate in Dalkeith, a position he retained until at least 1936. He was elected LRIBA on 22 June of the latter year, his proposers being John Jerdan, Arthur Forman Balfour Paul and the then secretary of the Edinburgh Architectural Society. In 1939-40 he was living at Park End House, Stichell, near Kelso.

Burchell died on 28 January 1943, survived by his wife Margaret Jean Kathleen Brown.
